Making an Interactive Tableau Walkthrough of Pokemon Emerald

After earning my Tableau Desktop Specialist Certification, I was eager to put my new skills to work in a real-world project. So, I chose a game that I had a lot of fun playing when I was a kid, and built a complete walkthrough using Tableau. First, I assembled my own dataset (with more than 250 rows and 50 columns) by scraping up-to-date information from Serebii and Bulbapedia. I even used ChatGPT to automate portions of the data-collection process, which enabled me to spend more time on ensuring the data was accurate and complete.

Once my data was ready, I created a series of dashboards designed for two kinds of players: those who want the optimal strategy to beat the game and those who simply want to catch ’em all. I experimented with a variety of chart types but found that colorful bar graphs best conveyed type match-ups and performance statistics. To bring everything together, I used Tableau’s logical relationships to build a “Type” field that drives both filtering and color-coding across sheets. Then I arranged my visualizations into a seamless Tableau story, walking viewers through each Gym Leader and Elite Four member, showing their teams and the best counters. This project showcases Tableau’s power for storytelling and analysis—and I learned a ton along the way. I’m really excited to use Tableau in a business context, as it’s quickly become one of my favorite tools for the data analysis process. Check out the full walkthrough below.
